Partnership is at the heart of ALIMA’s action
For us, a partner is not just another entity with which we work. We call all institutions, national and International NGOs, research laboratories, hospitals, donors, our partners with whom we share the objectives of our projects.
These partnerships may differ depending on the nature of the relationship:
- Partnerships with national organisations with which we share full responsibility for the joint project. ALIMA enables matching of a humanitarian need with a local capacity to respond. Medical skills and motivations often exist locally, but hit obstacles: project management expertise, technical support, access to finance, etc. Supporting loyal interveners in their commitment to humanitarian action can build a more sustainable response and better understand the reality of local capacities before deploying assistance.
- Partnerships with international organisations working in complementary fields. These ‘integrated’ partnerships correspond with a need to offer an overall response to a humanitarian issue. It is thus essential to associate an NGO with water and drainage skills when we are working in response to a cholera epidemic (in partnership with International Solidarity in Haiti), an NGO that addresses the food insecurity problem in a population when we are involved in treating malnutrition (partnership with GOAL) or with a medical NGO capable of mobilising excellent surgeons to deal with the complex injuries of the earthquake victims (in partnership with the Chain of Hope in Haiti).
- Finally, partnerships with research organizations that are needed to develop innovative solutions to current medical catastrophes. The world of research is suffering from a lack of capacity to develop projects in the Southern countries. From our side we see the need to advance operational strategies and procedures in order to better respond to humanitarian needs. The partnership between an operational medical NGO like ALIMA and researchers can enable the two approaches to be compared, and result in the study and possible validation of innovative ideas.
