One of ALIMA’s goals is working on Millennium Development Goal 4: targeting under-five mortality. One tactic to address the issue of childhood mortality is by decentralizing health care to village health workers.

Karolina’s project was determining what specific aspects of a community health worker could best be implemented in Niger – a population that is very different from others where community health workers have been successful. This poster summarizes her research goals, methodology, key findings, conclusions, and three-step implementation plan. Those results were  presented to her fellow students and faculty at Harvard Medical School on 12 January 2012, at the Soma Weiss poster session.

Pour cela, il s’appuie notamment sur le témoignage de Thierry Allafort Duverger, Président de Alima :

« L’ensemble du dispositif d’aide a été lent à se mettre en place contre le choléra », reconnaît Thierry Allafort-Duverger, président d’Alima, une ONG spécialisée dans la santé.

Pour leur défense, certains acteurs de l’entraide évoquent les difficultés à financer de nouveaux programmes faute de fonds privés. Les associations rappellent que l’argent public est souvent débloqué au bout d’un mois, voire beaucoup plus, ce qui les oblige à jongler avec les banques et les crédits.

« Echo, le fonds d’urgence de l’Union européenne, a très rapidement donné son accord, tempère cependant Thierry Allafort Duverger. Le problème est moins d’ordre financier que de savoir-faire. Cette épidémie montre surtout l’échec d’un mode d’assistance en Haïti, qui, après vingt ans de présence humanitaire, ne dispose toujours pas de système d’eau et d’assainissement. »
