Haiti

The earthquake of January 2010 has hit an already very weak country. Medical structures were directly damaged by the disaster, 60 % of the existing sanitary structures having been destroyed. 10 % of the medical workforce either died or left the country.

ALIMA has been working in Haiti since January 2010. ALIMA’s work in Haiti gives priority to the quality of treatment and the management of urgency. The method is to be closely associated with local actors; as it is the only means to solve specific needs.

One year after the earthquake, ALIMA was still involved in three different projects in Haiti:

-          a surgery project based in the capital city, Port-au-Prince, dealing with the aftermath of the seism;

-          a research project aiming at taking care of the wounded during the disaster;

-          a program aimed at healing people suffering from cholera.
